95 homeless people died in Dublin in 2022 as expert outlines reasons for deaths

According to recent data, 95 homeless individuals died in Dublin in 2022.

The statistics also showed that 23 of those who passed away were staying in supported temporary accommodation. Despite a drop from 115 deaths in 2021 due to homelessness, the alarming statistics are still significantly higher than those from the previous three years.

There are many contributing factors, but one of the most important is that homeless people are much more likely to experience violence while living on the streets, according to Dr. Austin O’Carroll, a Dublin-based expert on homelessness.

Speaking to Newstalk, who accessed the figures under the Freedom of Information Act, Dr. O’Carroll said: “Poverty is associated with things like increased addiction – including alcohol addiction and in particular drug addiction.

“People often enter homelessness as a result of these and these things do cause earlier death.” The doctor also said that homelessness can exacerbate these issues and liver failure and overdosing are significant causes of death among homeless people.

In addition, Dr. O’Carroll noted that due to their frequent street presence, homeless people are more likely to become the targets of violence and automobile accidents.

Professor Bill Tormey, a consultant at Beaumont Hospital, claimed there are additional factors at play. “Flu, Covid — all that sort of stuff – they would also kill people even though they go into hostels because they just pass it around among each other in hostels.”
