Antigen testing kits should not be relied upon as rate of false results are high, says Nphet

The National Public Health Emergency Team had warned people on not to rely on Covid 19 test kits sold through supermarkets. The results obtained are not accurate and high rate of false results have been found.

The test kits have been used uncontrollably, said the chief medical officer Dr Tony Holohan. He opines that the usage poses real risk against the fight of Covid 19 as lots of false results may confuse the entire medical system.

Lidl have started selling these kits worth €24.99 for a pack of five. The test uses a swab to take samples from your nose and results are not send to the lab for analysis. The results will be back within 15-20 minutes. PCR test is more acceptable and considered a gold standard in the accuracy of the results.
