Body of woman (87) found after missing from Carlow hospital

An elderly woman who went missing from a district hospital in Carlow yesterday and was discovered dead this morning has prompted the HSE to review its procedures.

Sheila Rice, an 87-year-old Carlow resident who was a patient at the town’s district hospital, left the facility by herself before 4 o’clock yesterday.

Family members, garda, HSE personnel, volunteers, and members of the Civil Defence all participated in the search operation.

After a body was discovered in the Strawhall neighbourhood of Carlow, not far from the scene of Mrs. Rice’s disappearance, the search was called off this morning.

The HSE announced this afternoon that a serious incident management team had been formed to investigate what truly happened.

It expressed gratitude to everyone who helped with the search and condolences to the woman’s family, friends, and loved ones.
