CWG 2022: India’s 14-year-old Squash player Anahat Singh, kicks off with victory

India’s youngest athlete , 14-year-old Anahat Singh who is competing in the squash women’s singles tournament at the Commonwealth Games, got off to a strong start on Day 1.

Anahat, the youngest member of India’s CWG contingent, defeated Jada Ross of Saint Vincente and the Grenadines in her women’s singles round of 64 matches. She won the game by a margin of 11-5, 11-2, 11-0.

The teenage player was hard to play against and secured the win within three straight games to qualify for the round of 32.

Anahat was selected for the Indian team because of her remarkable performance at the under-15 level, which included victories at the German Open and Asian Junior Squash this year.

Her opponent Ross made a sweet gesture to the little Indian after she won the opening round of the CWG 2022. Despite a gruelling defeat, she kept on a cheerful face and hugged Anahat; this was followed by thunderous applause from the crowds at the University Show Court in Birmingham.

Reacting to her fairly straightforward victory in the opening round, the 14-year-old Indian squash player revealed she didn’t know “what to expect” since it was her first-ever senior tournament.

“It’s really exciting and so much fun,” Anahat said, as quoted by PTI.

“It’s my first senior tournament, so I didn’t really know what to expect, but I got more confident as the match went on. I had nothing to lose, She said.

Meanwhile, Indian squash player Abhay Singh also won his opening match at the Commonwealth Games 2022.

Abhay, representing India in his first-ever CWG defeated Joe Chapman of the British Virgin Islands in his round of 64 match. He won by scores of 11-5, 11-5, and 11-5. He did not give Chapman any chance to make a comeback and secured the win in just three games, with two more to go.
