Dublin’s new traffic plan: Bumpy start, smooth finish

Dublin’s new traffic restrictions on the Quays are showing promise, despite a slight increase in cars on Tuesday. The plan, which began on Sunday, aims to reduce private vehicles driving through the city center.

More cars were seen today, likely due to bad weather and schools reopening. However, traffic still flowed better than before the new rules started.

According to Irish Independent, the restrictions prevent drivers from using certain parts of Bachelor’s Walk, Eden Quay, Burgh Quay, and Aston Quay between 7am and 7pm. While most drivers followed the rules, some still ignored them.

Dublin City Council staff were on hand to guide confused drivers, but no police were present. The Garda Síochána (Irish police) said they’re allowing a “period of familiarisation” for drivers to adjust.

Brendan O’Brien from Dublin City Council reported a noticeable decrease in private cars on the Quays. He said, “People have taken notice and taken alternative routes.”

Despite the bumpy start, officials remain optimistic. They’ll continue monitoring the situation and working with police to ensure the plan’s success.
