First president of new South East Technological University appointed

Higher Education Minister Simon Harris has confirmed the first president of the South East Technological University.

Professor Veronica Campbell has been appointed the first president of South East Technological University (SETU), which has multi-regional campuses in Carlow, Waterford, Wexford, and Wicklow.

Speaking today, Minister Harris said, “The South East Technological University will become a reality in just three days’ time.

“I wish to congratulate Professor Campbell on this appointment. She will lead the TU on this journey. Veronica has a distinguished career in academia, strategic investment, and innovation.

“I wish her all the best in this role. SETU is of vital importance for the country.

“Professor Campbell also becomes the third female president of a TU. Less than 2 years ago, we had no female presidents in the higher education sector. Now we have 6. The glass ceiling has been well and truly shattered.”

The appointment follows an open and competitive process chaired by Professor Brian MacCraith. There were 22 applications.

Professor Campbell has worked in higher education for 25 years. Originally from Scotland, Professor Campbell has served as Director of Strategic Innovation and Dean of Graduate Studies at Trinity College Dublin.

Professor Campbell has also served as a member of the board of Trinity College, and a member of the finance committee, among many others.

SETU will officially celebrate its launch in September in a ceremony to mark the university’s first academic year and the first intake of university students.
