Hundreds attend Co Cork rally in support of refugees and asylum seekers

On Saturday afternoon, a protest in Fermoy, Co. Cork, in favour of refugees and asylum seekers was organized.

At the rally, up to 300 individuals showed up.

It came after a protest on Wednesday night by hundreds of people outside a town’s housing complex where 66 freshly arrived candidates for international protection (IP) are staying.

People of various ages came with banners at the event today, chanting, “Refugees welcome, asylum seekers welcome.”

Kate O’Connell, one of the organisers, said: “If you live here, you belong here. Fermoy is your home.”

She said “hate mongers” do not bring solutions to communities.

A few individuals associated with the protests on Wednesday made an effort to interact with some of the rally attendees.
