Amazon to cut 14,000 jobs globally as Irish workers face uncertainty

Tech giant reducing corporate workforce by 4% to streamline operations and fund AI investments

Amazon has confirmed plans to lay off approximately 14,000 corporate employees worldwide as part of cost-cutting measures aimed at reducing management layers and funding its substantial artificial intelligence investments.

The cuts will exclusively affect white-collar workers, representing about 4% of Amazon’s corporate workforce of roughly 350,000 employees. The company’s total global workforce exceeds 1.5 million people.

Senior Vice President Beth Galetti told employees the restructuring aims to reduce bureaucracy and redirect resources toward priority areas including AI development. Affected employees will have 90 days to seek internal positions in other departments before separation.

Irish Impact Unclear

Amazon currently employs around 6,500 people in Ireland, including staff at its fulfillment center in Dublin’s Baldonnell Business Park. The company has not yet confirmed whether the global cuts will affect Irish operations, leaving local employees uncertain about their positions.

The announcement comes as Amazon faces mounting pressure to demonstrate returns on its massive AI investments. The company recently experienced a major outage at its cloud computing division AWS, which disrupted numerous popular internet services globally and highlighted infrastructure vulnerabilities.

The layoffs represent Amazon’s latest workforce reduction as technology companies reassess staffing levels following pandemic-era expansion. The restructuring reflects broader industry trends as firms balance operational costs against heavy investments in emerging AI technologies.

Irish employees and representative organizations await clarification on how the global cuts will translate to local operations.
