Argentina wins World Cup on penalty shootout over France

Argentina won the World Cup after the most exciting final in the 92-year history of the competition, led by Lionel Messi.

Messi finally got his hands on the coveted World Cup trophy in what he said will be his last match in this tournament. 

The Lusail Stadium in Qatar witnessed one of the greatest World Cup finals of all time.

This is the first time in a long time that a South American country has won the title.

Messi and Angel Di Maria gave Argentina the lead before Kylian Mbappe scored twice in the closing minutes.

Messi restored Argentina’s lead in extra time, but Mbappe again hit back for France, completing his hat-trick and taking the game to a penalty shootout.

Argentina won the shootout 4-2, claiming the World Cup and victory in one of the sport’s all-time great games.

Winner Argentina and runners-up France will receive the highest payouts, totaling $72 million in winnings. Argentina will be getting a cash prize worth $42 million. On the other hand, prize money of $30 million is set aside for the runner-up team France.
