Ashling Murphy’s funeral to take place in Co Offaly, today

The 23-year-old teacher was killed on Wednesday evening as she went for a run by the Grand Canal in Tullamore, Co Offaly. 

The funeral of school teacher Ashling Murphy will take place in Co Offaly at 11am this morning.

The 23-year-old teacher was attacked and killed at Cappincur on the Grand Canal in Tullamore last Wednesday afternoon.

The funeral cortege will leave Ashling’s home at 10.30am and arrive at St Brigid’s Church in Mount Bolus

Ms Murphy’s parents Raymond and Kathleen, her sister Amy, brother Cathal and boyfriend Ryan will be among the chief mourners.

Teachers and pupils from Coolanarney National School in Blueball, where Ms Murphy went to school, will form a guard of honour.

Teacher unions have asked schools across the country to observe a minute of silence in Ashling’s memory, at 11am this morning.

Her many friends from school, college, her local GAA club Kilcormac/Killoughey and Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann will also attend the funeral. She was also a member of Ballyboy Comhaltas.

Local musicians, many of whom Ms Murphy played with throughout the years, will play the music.

Parish priest Fr Michael Meade will be the chief celebrant at this morning’s mass. President Michael D Higgins, Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Minister for Justice Helen McEntee will be attending the funeral mass.

Ms Murphy will ‘rest in peace’ forever in Lowertown cemetery nearby, following the funeral mass.
