Belfast Pride returns to streets for first time in three years

Belfast’s Pride parade returns to the city on Saturday, with organisers promising the largest one the city has ever witnessed.

For the first time in three years, the typically yearly celebration that was postponed during the height of the Covid-19 outbreak is back in the streets.

135 organisations registered to march in the parade the last time it was conducted, in 2019.

The application period had to be closed early this year due to the 200 group registrations that were received.

This year’s Pride celebration has the theme “community united in diversity,” and a group of refugees and asylum seekers who have settled in Belfast have been asked to lead the afternoon march through the city centre.

Ulster Rugby and Ulster GAA are notable additions to the parade lineup this year.

Co-chairman of the Belfast Pride Festival John O’Doherty said: “We’re so excited to be back on the streets of Belfast. This is going to be the biggest Belfast Pride parade Belfast has ever seen, we’ve more groups marching than ever before.
