Cabinet to discuss Ireland’s response to Ukraine situation

Ministers will discuss the latest situation in Ukraine and the Government response at a Cabinet meeting this morning.

In the Dáil, TDs will debate a motion supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and condemning Russia’s aggression.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney, will update colleagues on his latest information on the European Union response and the picture on the ground.

Ministers will also discuss how Ireland will play its part within the EU in helping Ukrainian refugees – including potentially simplifying the system.

Later, the Dáil will hold a two-hour debate on the crisis.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee will seek approval from Cabinet to publish a report on Ireland’s defamation laws.

This has recommended the abolition of juries in High Court cases and a mechanism to allow for the dismissal of vexatious cases.

A Bill will be drawn up giving legal effect to the report’s recommendations.

The Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, will also present the HSE’s National Service Plan for 2022 detailing how it intends to spend its budget.
