Call on Ireland to take in at least 1,000 refugees from Afghanistan; Situation worsen as women models’ photos on walls white washed in Kabul

International human rights organisations including The Irish Refugee Council, Amnesty International and the Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland (Masi) requested Ireland to take in more refugees from the Taliban caught Afghanistan. The Irish government had confirmed that 195 humanitarian visas would be issued for Afghan refugees. But as the situation worsens in Afghanistan, this may not be enough.

Reports say a vast number of asylum seekers are trying to escape from the country as they fear the come back of barbarian and brutal ruling of the Taliban terrorists. The Taliban are targeting even girls as young as 12 to marry their fighters and are posing huge threat particularly to women’s rights, international media report. The worsening situation and fear for future sufferings are making many citizens including women and children to flee from the country. There were reports that almost 1,000 people from Afghanistan were carried by US military flights.

There are also reports that women and men in the country are forced to buy traditional Islamic wears as the Taliban reached Kabul. The photos of women models from the walls of shops and other public places are being masked with paint. According to the Taliban law, women are not permitted to take their photos or wear anything other than burqa in public spaces.

The international organisations are requesting the Irish government to help resettle at least 1,000 refugees from Afghanistan. They also urge Ireland to participate in a wider EU relocation scheme.

The Foreign Minister of Ireland Mr Simon Coveney had made it clear that no proposed deportations of Afghani nationals from Ireland will not take place as the situation in the country worsened. James Brown TD also repeated the same on his twitter handle today.

Before the Taliban take over, Ireland had planned to receive 1,350 refugees from Afghanistan. But due to the pandemic, they could take in only 250 people and the organisations are pointing at these statistics.

Meanwhile the international media report, the Taliban are in talks with other officials in Afghanistan to form new government including other non-Taliban leaders.
