Dublin’s Hindu community hosted first-ever in-person Durga Puja celebrations at new cultural centre

Celebrations were in full swing as the Indian community hosted the first-ever Durga Puja festivities at a brand new cultural centre in Dublin.

Durga Puja is a 10-day festival that honours the Hindu goddess Durga and marks her victory over the demigod Mahishasura.

This year saw massive celebrations as the Vedic Hindu Cultural Centre of Ireland (VHCCI) hosted its first in-person festival in Ballymount.

Dr Hemant Kumar, who moved to Ireland 25 years ago said the the celebrations are a nostalgic reminder of the festivities back in his home country.

The president of the VHCCI expressed his happiness: “It reminds us that we grew up in this type of atmosphere, in this Navratra festival in India. It was everywhere – the East, West, North, or South.

“The festival would be celebrated with this fervour all the time.”

He said he hopes the cultural centre, which was established last year, would help the new generation of Irish-Indian children to connect with their roots.

The colourful celebrations included plenty of food, music, and dancing.
