Fields of Athenry and The Rare Ould Times songwriter Pete St John has died aged 90

Traditional music legend Pete St John, who wrote world-famous ballads such as The Fields of Athenry and The Rare Auld Times, has died at the age of 90.

Pete St John died peacefully earlier today at Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital, his family said.

He is best known for writing The Fields of Athenry was written in 1979 and has become an anthem for Irish supporters on sporting occasions, making the Co. Galway town is famous across the world.

Pete St. John’s songs have been recorded by many Irish bands and artists, including The Dubliners and Paddy Reilly.

He won many awards for his work including the IMRO songwriter of the year award and the Variety Club of Ireland’s Gold Heart’ Award for his outstanding contribution to Irish music and song

Pete St John was born Peter Mooney in Dublin in 1932.

He is survived by his sons Kieron and Brian Mooney and was predeceased by his wife Susan.
