Ford and Renault join forces to launch electric vehicles for European market

Partnership aims to counter Chinese EV surge with 2028 launch target

US automaker Ford and French manufacturer Renault are joining forces to develop electric vehicles for the European market, responding to the surge of Chinese vehicles across the continent.

The two companies have agreed to launch small electric vehicles and vans under a joint venture that will feature a blue oval-shaped logo on the vehicles produced.

The first vehicle from the partnership is expected to be released in 2028, with Ford focusing on vehicle design while Renault handles the technology components.

The collaboration aims to reduce costs and enable faster market expansion at a time when electric vehicle production in Europe represents a significant expense for Ford. By pooling resources and expertise, both companies hope to compete more effectively against Chinese EV manufacturers that have gained substantial market share in Europe.

Ford will continue producing vans in the European market through its existing collaboration with Volkswagen, while simultaneously developing the new range with Renault. Renault has maintained partnerships with Japanese companies Nissan and Mitsubishi, as well as Chinese manufacturer Geely.

The partnership reflects broader consolidation trends in the automotive industry as traditional manufacturers face mounting pressure from Chinese competitors offering competitively priced electric vehicles. European and American automakers are increasingly seeking partnerships to share development costs and accelerate their transition to electric mobility.
