Further 1,903 cases of Covid in the country today; 50,000 children registered for vaccine

Further 1,903 people in the country were contracted by corona virus on Thursday, the National Public Health Emergency Team (Nphet) confirmed. As of now 219 patients are in hospitals with Covid and 37 among them are being treated in ICUs.

Meanwhile HSE chief medical officer Dr Tony Holohan has said the vaccines are about 80% effective in preventing symptomatic Covid and about 95% effective in preventing the need for hospitalisations. He also said the vaccines are preventing at least 2,700 cases of infection each week per million of the population.

Those who have not availed vaccines yet can book their slots and know about nearest vaccine centres through www.HSE.ie , Dr Holohan added.

Another report from the Health Service Executive (HSE) stated that more than 50,000 children aged 12-15 had been registered for vaccines after the portal opened last night.
