Gerard Hutch being brought to Ireland today for Regency Hotel murder trial

Gerard Hutch, popularly known as Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch will face court proceedings in Ireland in connection with the gun fire that killed one person in Regency Hotel in 2016. The 58-year-old Irish criminal had been arrested in Spain last month and the Irish Air Corps are bringing him back here for the proceedings today. He was arrested on the Costa Del Sol following a European Arrest Warrant issued by the High Court.

Hutch became notorious after the armed robberies carried out in Ireland in late 1980s and in mid 1990s where millions of Euros were stolen. He never admitted the robberies and said his wealth was from various businesses. But the authorities didn’t believe him and started thorough investigation to his business and properties in 1999. Following the investigations, Hutch was forced to reach a settlement with the criminal assets bureau and returned £1.2m said to be to ‘cover back taxes and interest for a nine-year period.’

Later he was involved in the Hutch- Kinahan feud which claimed 18 lives so far and said to be directly linked to the Regency Hotel shooting took place on February 5, 2016. An associate of Kinahan crime family David Byrne had died following gun wounds and Hutch is facing murder charges in connection with this. Reports say that the feud was started following the Kinahan family killed Gerard Hutch’s nephew Gary Hutch’s in 2015.

Mr. Hutch is being escorted on the Air Corps Casa plane by gardaí from the extradition section and is due to arrive at Casement Aerodrome in Baldonnel this evening.
