India wins historic gold and silver in men’s triple jump at Commonwealth Games 2022

Eldhose Paul and Abdulla Aboobacker achieved a historic gold and silver medal finish for India in the men’s triple jump competition at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham on Sunday.

Paul earned his best mark of 17.03m on his third try, and Aboobacker came in second with 17.02m, which he accomplished in his fifth attempt.

Eldhose Paul, who last month made history as the first Indian triple jumper to compete in the global athletics championships final, set a new personal best at Birmingham 2022, finishing first in a field of 14 competitors. The 16.99m he recorded at the Federation Cup earlier this year was his previous best.

Bermuda’s Jah-Nhai Perinchief clinched the bronze medal with 16.92m, denying the Indians a clean sweep.

India has won four triple jump medals in the past editions but this is the first time two athletes from the country have got podium finishes.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Eldhose Paul for winning gold and Abdulla Aboobacker for winning silver in the triple jump event at CommonwealthGames2022.

Before Birmingham, India had won only four medals in the triple jump at the Commonwealth Games. Mohinder Singh Gill won a bronze (1970) and silver (1974), national record holder Renjith Maheswary won a bronze (2010) and Arpinder Singh won a bronze (2014).
