‘Indian Ladies In Ireland’, Brings Out Powerful Women’s Voices

On this International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the ‘Indian Ladies In Ireland’, an amazing Facebook group under Supriya Singh, had organized an online event with some powerful women from around the globe. This online event was held from 25th to 27th November 2022.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Women’s rights activists have observed 25 November as a day against gender-based violence since 1981. On 7th February 2000, the General Assembly officially designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and in doing so, invited governments, international organizations as well as NGOs to join together and organize activities designed to raise public awareness of the issue every year on that date.

Indian Ladies In Ireland

The group, ‘Indian Ladies In Ireland’, is a Facebook group formed by Supriya Singh, a social worker and a former BBC Journalist, in 2017. They organised a 3 day event/ campaign to spread awareness on Human Rights observing International Day of Elimination Of Violence Against Women. This online event had brought forward some powerful women from around the globe to share their thoughts on this topic.

This online event which was held from 25th to 27th November 2022, had scheduled the talks of Senator Emer Currie, TD Emer Higgins, Irish Fine Gael politician for Dublin Mid-West, Dr. Kiran Bedi, first woman IPS officer and Indian social activist, Diana Stahl, Director of Public Affairs at the Scientology Community Centre, Dublin and so on.

History

  1. In 2017 the group organised their first ever flash mob in Ireland by Indian ladies at Grafton Street to celeberate Indian Independence Day on 15th August.
  2. The group has been active in helping the people in need. From organising charitable activities such as donating sensory toys to the organisation working with kids with special needs to initiating “Feed the homeless drive in Dublin’s city centre with the help of Gurudwara”
  3. The aim of the Indian Ladies in Ireland group is to keep the spirit of India alive in Ireland through various social and cultural activities.
  4. This year the group organised Teej celeberations along with Friendship day to bring all the communities together under one roof, in Ireland.
  5. The group believes in represenattion of women in every field. From standing for women rights to celeberating International Women’s day and giving oppourtunity to several Indian ladies in Ireland excelling in their fields to reach out to masses via video messages on their work, the group has become a voice representing Indian Ladies community in Ireland.
  6. This month, the 3-day campaign on UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was organised by the group to spread awareness on women’s rights, which is basic Human rights in a fight against domestic violence.
  7. Besides this, the group has been very helpful for ladies looking for a career guidance, job support, visa information, and it has also been a great platform to advertise their talents and seek advice and support when in need.

Indian-Ireland Friendship

The Indian media has also been very supportive of the work that the group has been doing. The events organised by the group has been covered by various news channels and digital platforms in India & Ireland. This has been a great step in strengthening the bond between India & Ireland.

The new initiative by the ‘Indian Ladies In Ireland’, will also be a start to some great support and activities for the protection and empowerment of women.
