Indian-origin Rishi Sunak top competitor to be next British Prime Minister

Indian-origin Rishi Sunak, former Finance Minister of Britain is believed to be the competitor for the next British Prime Minister.

Rishi Sunak, whose resignation as the chancellor of the exchequer triggered a series of resignations against PM Boris Johnson.

Rishi Sunak, 42, announced his decision on Twitter saying:” I’m standing to be the next leader of the Conservative Party and your Prime Minister. Let’s restore trust, rebuild the economy and reunite the country.”

If it happens, he will be the first Indian-origin man to be the Prime Minister of the UK.

To take part in the race, a Tory MP has to be nominated by eight colleagues. If more than two MPs put themselves forward and secure enough nominations to run for leader, a series of secret ballots are held to whittle them down.

In a glossy launch video in which he set out his family history, Mr Sunak said: “Our country faces huge challenges, the most serious for a generation.

“And the decisions we make today will decide whether the next generation of British people will also have the chance of a better future.”
