Hills Cricket Club player becomes source of pride for Irish Indian-origin community

Fabin Manoj has become a source of pride for the Indian-origin community in Ireland after being selected for the Ireland U-19 Cricket World Cup squad, marking a significant milestone in his international cricket career.

The star player from Hills Cricket Club in Dublin joins the Irish team as they prepare for the global tournament with high expectations following improved performances in recent years.

Coach Expresses Confidence

Head coach Peter Johnston said the Ireland team enters the World Cup with strong confidence. “The Ireland team, which finished 10th in 2022 and 8th in 2024, has high hopes this time. Our team has the strength to compete with the best teams in the world,” he stated.

Johnston emphasized that captain Ollie Riley and vice-captain Ruben Wilson’s experience will prove valuable assets. The squad has been strengthened through rigorous training sessions ongoing since September, complemented by guidance from senior players George Dockrell, Gareth Delany, and Lorcan Tucker.

Dream Achievement

Fabin responded enthusiastically to his World Cup selection: “This is a dream achievement. I see this opportunity as the biggest recognition for my hard work and training. My goal is to perform well for the team and make the country proud.”

He thanked coaches, family, and Ireland’s Indian-origin community for supporting his sporting journey. Observers expect Fabin’s all-round excellence to strengthen the Irish squad.

Family Background

Fabin is the son of Manoj John, originally from Kottarakkara Chengamanadu, and Beena Varghese, a clinical nurse manager at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Athy. His sister is Neha Manoj.

“Fabin achieved this rise with the prayers and support of his friends and the Indian community in Ireland,” said Manoj John, emphasizing that unwavering family encouragement has been the main force behind his son’s success.

Community Celebration

Fabin’s classmates, friends, and the broader Indian-origin community in Ireland are celebrating this achievement, which marks a new chapter in Irish cricket history.

The selection highlights the growing contributions of Indian-origin athletes to Irish sports, following recent successes including Indian-origin students Joel Emmanuel and Amal Rajesh’s eighth-place finish with Ireland’s robotics team at the First Global Challenge.

Fabin’s journey from Dublin club cricket to the international stage demonstrates the pathways available for young talent in Ireland’s developing cricket program as the sport gains prominence beyond traditional strongholds.
