Ireland overtakes UK in terms of vaccine rollout as unexpected numbers of people turned up in walk-in vaccination centres

Ireland has overtaken neighbouring UK in terms of vaccine rollout, said Taoiseach Michael Martin. The country now vaccinated 72.4% of adults while UK’s vaccinated adult population stands 72.1%.

“The vaccine rollout is continuing at great pace. Today we edged ahead of our nearest neighbours – a brilliant effort by everyone involved,” Mr Martin said. He also praised the rise in number of people turning up in recently established walk-in vaccination cenrtres on the weekend. The HSE started walk-in vaccination centres all over the country since Saturday and Almost 20 centres will be operational today as well as tomorrow.

In a tweet Martin said, “Great to see the walk-in #Covid19 vaccine clinics up and running — and the positive uptake already.”

In the mean time health officials confirmed 1,427 more Covid cases in Ireland yesterday. It also marked the total number of people being infected since the start of the pandemic crossing 300,000. As per the latest report, there are 164 patients under treatment due to Covid and 26 of them are in intensive care units. As a result of recent cyber-attacks on HSE IT system, the number of Covid deaths in the country and county based Covid cases are unable to publish.
