Ireland to interrogate India over Danielle murder trial delay

A delegation will be sent by the The Department of Foreign Affairs to India to lobby for the trial of the man accused of raping and murdering Donegal backpacker Danielle McLaughlin to get properly under way.

The body of Danielle (28), from Buncrana, Co Donegal, was found in a field between the Agonda and Canacona beaches in south Goa in March 2017. Her friend, Vikat Bhagat, was later charged with her murder, which he denies.

She was believed to have been visiting Goa with a friend to celebrate the Indian festival of Holi.

His trial, which began more than four years ago, in July 2017, has been delayed for a while now.

At the current pace of trials, justice would be denied for another seven years. For murder trials in India’s justice system, which is often fraught with setbacks and lengthy stoppages, this is nothing new.
