Irish rowing team sets record after crossing Atlantic

By rowing from the Canary Islands to Antigua in 33 days, 12 hours, and 38 minutes, an Irish crew of mostly inexperienced rowers has broken the previous record for the quickest Atlantic crossing by a team of five rowers.

Around 8.30 p.m. local time yesterday, Tom Nolan, Shane Culleton, Derek McMullen, and brothers Gearoid and Diarmuid Briain from Wicklow crossed the finish line of The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Rowing Challenge (12.30 am Irish time).

They departed from La Gomera in the Canary Islands on December 12, 2022, rowing under the team name “Row Hard or Go Home 5.”

They beat the previous mark set by the “The Ocean 5” team, who finished the same race in 35 days, 19 hours, and 50 minutes in January 2020.

The five-person team “Row Hard or Go Home 5” was the first to cross the finish line and came in fifth overall.

The four-person Spanish team “Ocean Cats,” which completed the race in 31 days, 17 hours, and 8 minutes, was the overall winner of the race.
