Irish soldier dies in parachuting accident in Spain

A parachuting accident in Spain resulted in the death of an Irish soldier.

Company Sergeant Declan “Doc” O’Connell, who is thought to be in his early 50s, died yesterday while off duty.

In a statement on Sunday, the Defense Forces confirmed his death and stated that the news has been conveyed to his family.

“The Defence Forces can confirm that a serving member has died in a parachuting accident in Spain.

“He was off duty at the time,” it said.

It is understood that the Department of Foreign Affairs is liaising with the Defence Force’s member’s family at this stage.

The tragic news comes after Irish UN peacekeeper Seán Rooney’s death in Lebanon in December from a duty-related shooting.
