Merck to close Arklow pharmaceutical plant, threatening 100 jobs

German multinational to wind down Irish facility by 2028 while expanding Cork operations

Pharmaceutical giant Merck has announced plans to close its manufacturing facility in Arklow, County Wicklow, by the end of 2028, putting up to 100 jobs at risk.

The German multinational confirmed it is considering shutting down the plant’s active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) portfolio, with formal consultations with employees set to begin soon. The closure represents a three-year timeline for winding down operations at the site.

Despite the Arklow closure, Merck emphasized that its substantial investments in County Cork remain unaffected. The company is currently investing €440 million in its Cork operations, including a recently completed €150 million filtration manufacturing facility at Blarney Business Park.

The decision comes as Merck adjusts its global strategy amid challenging market conditions. Last week, the company announced expectations for gradual improvement in its life sciences and electronics divisions in 2025, though its healthcare business faces temporary constraints. Merck projects net income between €20.5 billion and €21.7 billion for 2025.

CEO Belen Garrijo acknowledged the company had lowered its financial targets, citing unmet post-pandemic expectations that have required strategic reassessment across its operations.

The Arklow closure adds to concerns about pharmaceutical sector restructuring in Ireland, though the country remains a significant hub for global drug manufacturing. Workers and local representatives will participate in upcoming consultations about the facility’s future.
