Nearly a third of households are finding it difficult to afford housing expenses, according to latest data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

The report revealed that 29.5 per cent of households experienced housing costs as a heavy financial burden in 2024. These costs include rent, mortgage payments, insurance, utility bills, and maintenance expenses.
While this figure remains largely unchanged from 2022 (30.9 per cent) and 2023 (30.6 per cent), it has increased from 23.1 per cent in 2021.
Renters are particularly affected, with over 40 per cent reporting financial strain due to housing costs. Recent figures from Daft.ie indicated that new tenancy rents are nearing €2,000 per month.
Owner-occupiers are also feeling the pressure, with 25 per cent struggling to cover mortgage and accommodation costs, according to the CSO Survey on Income and Living Conditions (SILC): Enforced Deprivation 2024 report.
