Revenue seizes 13 million cigarettes worth €12.3 million at Dublin Port

Revenue officers seized 13 million smuggled cigarettes at Dublin Port last week in a major operation targeting illegal tobacco trade. The seizure, which took place on Friday, represents a potential loss to the Exchequer of €9.6 million.

The contraband was discovered following routine risk profiling of cargo arriving at the port. Revenue’s mobile X-ray scanner and detector dog Kobe assisted in identifying the suspicious shipment during inspection operations.

The smuggled cigarettes were concealed within a container that had arrived via Rotterdam and had been disguised to appear as a legitimate furniture shipment. Upon examination, officers uncovered the massive quantity of cigarettes branded as “Excellence” with an estimated retail value of €12.3 million.

Revenue confirmed that investigations into the seizure are ongoing. The operation forms part of Revenue’s continued efforts targeting smuggling operations and shadow economy activity that undermines legitimate businesses and deprives the State of vital tax revenue.

Tobacco smuggling remains a significant concern for Irish authorities, with criminal networks attempting to circumvent excise duties that make cigarettes substantially more expensive in Ireland compared to other jurisdictions. These illegal operations not only result in lost tax revenue but also undermine public health efforts to reduce smoking rates through taxation.

Revenue encourages businesses and members of the public with information about smuggling or shadow economy activity to come forward. Information can be provided in confidence by calling the Revenue Confidential Phone Number at 1800 295 295.

The successful interception demonstrates the effectiveness of Revenue’s multi-layered approach to detecting contraband, combining risk profiling, advanced scanning technology, and specially trained detector dogs to identify illegal shipments among the high volume of legitimate cargo passing through Irish ports daily.
