Storm Franklin after Eunice with status orange wind warnings issued

Status Orange wind warnings have been issued by Met Éireann for several counties as Storm Franklin makes its way across Ireland.

An orange wind warning is in place for Co Clare until midnight, while counties Sligo, Leitrim, and Donegal are also under an orange alert until 7 o’clock today morning.

A Met Éireann spokesperson said earlier that there could be gusts in excess of 110km per hour on higher ground.

She also warned of the risk of more falling trees and possible power cuts.

“Some structures will have been weakened by Storm Eunice so extra care is needed with two big weather events coming close together,” the spokesperson said, adding that waves and high seas could reach up to 14 meters off the north coast.

A separate Status Yellow wind warning is in place for all of Ireland until 9 o’clock today morning, with persistent rain and heavy showers leading to localised flooding in some places.

Northern Ireland is also under a yellow wind warning, with strong winds expected to cause disruption tonight along coastal areas.

Two marine warnings have also been issued – a Status Orange storm alert from Valentia to Rossan Point to Belfast Lough is in place until 6 am tomorrow, with northwesterly winds reaching storm force 10.

High winds led to the cancellation of a flight from Shannon to Edinburgh, and the diversion to Dublin of two other flights from Edinburgh and Fuerteventura.
