Aldi said its prices will drop to 89c for white bread, 99c for brown bread and €1.09 for white Mega-Toast.

Leaders from all the major supermarkets were invited to the Retail Forum due to concerns about the high cost of food.

Minister of State Neale Richmond described the meeting of the forum as a frank discussion.

Richmond said he “received assurances from retailers that, where reductions in input costs filter through to products, consumers will benefit from this.”

He described it as “an open and frank conversation” which discussed the factors driving inflation for grocery goods. which is higher than the general rate of inflation.
