Twitter Community; New feature to connect like-minded people on Twitter

Twitter introduces new feature called ‘Communities’ to help like-minded people share tweets and replies. The feature is running on an experimental basis and only available on iOS and Twitter website for now. But android users can still view the Community tweets.

Under the new feature, the users can join a community of like-minded people based on common interests like cats, weather, plants, surfing etc. It works similar to a Facebook group where the existing users of a Community can invite others or the moderators can add them.

Anyone on Twitter can see the tweets posted in a Community, but replies to these tweets can only be done by members of the specific Community. Meanwhile anyone out of the Community circle can embed or report the tweet.

“There’s always been a broad, weird and wonderful range of conversations on Twitter, but we haven’t done enough to help connect people who are into the same things,” said David Regan, Twitter’s staff product manager.

“Starting today, we’re testing Communities, a way to easily find and connect with people who want to talk about the same things you do.” he added.

Access to the feature will be via a tab at the bottom of the iOS app and along the sidebar of Twitter’s website. Anyone can be invited to join a Community using direct message facility.

As the feature is on the experimental stage, Twitter is closely monitoring the possibilities of people using the Communities to spread contents like hatred and extremism.
