Paris — Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat is making history at the Paris Olympics 2024 by becoming the first Indian woman to compete for an Olympic gold medal in wrestling.
Phogat’s path to the final was nothing short of extraordinary. She began with a stunning 3-2 victory over world No. 1 and reigning Olympic champion Yui Susaki of Japan, ending Susaki’s 83-bout unbeaten streak. This victory set the stage for Phogat’s incredible run.
In the quarterfinals, Phogat defeated 2018 European champion Oksana Livach of Ukraine. She then secured her spot in the final with a commanding 5-0 win over Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the semifinals.
Phogat’s performance marks a significant comeback after a challenging period since the Tokyo Olympics. Following a disappointing quarterfinal loss in 2021, she faced controversy with the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) and even considered retirement.
Her determination is fueled by a desire to create a better environment for future wrestlers. “I am fighting for the future generation of wrestlers,” Phogat told ESPN. “Not for myself; my career is done. This is my last Olympics. I want to fight for the young women wrestlers who will come after me.”
Phogat had to adapt to compete in the 50kg category after failing to qualify in her usual 53kg class. Her perseverance has paid off, culminating in a historic run at the Paris Olympics.
Phogat will face American wrestler Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the gold medal match on Wednesday. Regardless of the outcome, Phogat’s journey has already inspired many and cemented her legacy in Indian sports history.
