Waterford Train Station Back In Action After Flooding

Waterford train station has reopened, after being shut down earlier this morning, due to flooding caused by a high spring tide.

Earlier, water had covered the rails at the platform, which prevented the scheduled 7.50 am train from Waterford to Dublin Heuston from leaving the station. Though this issue occurred a number of times last year following long periods of rain, this is the first closure of 2023 due to flooding.

A spokesperson for Iarnród Éireann said the 7.20 am train from Dublin Heuston to Waterford will be able to arrive at the station. Iarnród Éireann’s Communications Manager Barry Kenny said, “that train journey began in Kilkenny with passengers being bused to Waterford. High tide tonight could bring further flooding. This could lead to more transfers for customers”, he said.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Mr. Kenny said flooding is not frequent in this area, but it is not unusual.

The Waterford North Quays Project will relocate Plunkett station in Waterford, which is due to be ready by 2026, he said.

“The end is in sight for this as an issue for us and for our customers,” he added.
