The Garda have announced that new average speed zone cameras will be installed at a stretch on M7 motorway in Co Tipperary. The stretch lies between Junction 26- Nenagh(West) and Junction 27- Birdhill. Transport Infrastructure Ireland and Road Safety Authority are also a part in implementing the system. They said that people are going at very dangerous speed which may lead to accidents. 40% of the motorists are exceeding the 120 kmph limit on certain occasions.
The installation of cameras have already started on March 8th and will undergo testing and commissioning. The camera system involves a yellow pole and cameras attached along with a speed measuring unit. This system had already been implemented near the Dublin Port tunnel since 2017 and authorities says thay the driving habit of people had been improved very well.
In the opinion of Tom Murphy, the Garda superintendent, this system is very effective in controlling motorists from overspeeding and save our lives and roads as well. Garda are very delighted to co-operate with TII and RSA in implementing the project.
TII Head of Network Operations said that the camera installations at Dublin stands as a model on how effective and useful the project is. The safety benefits for both road users and Garda on road on the wider motorway and it also adds to international experience.
