Driving Test Backlog In Cork Reaches Crisis Point: Over 6,300 Await Tests Amidst Growing Concerns

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has revealed alarming figures that highlight the growing crisis surrounding the driving test backlog in Cork. With more than 6,300 individuals anxiously awaiting their turn to take the practical driving test, concerns are mounting over the prolonged waiting times and their impact on both aspiring drivers and public safety.

The RSA’s latest data has revealed that the waiting period for a driving test at the Sarsfield Road center in Wilton has reached an astounding 38 weeks, while hopeful drivers in Ballincollig face a slightly shorter but still concerning wait of 12 weeks. These extended waiting times have led to frustration and inconvenience for those seeking to obtain their driver’s licenses.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, over 2,000 individuals have already booked their driving theory tests by the end of September, indicating a significant surge in demand for driver testing services. However, with the current backlog, it is becoming increasingly likely that many of these individuals may not be able to take their practical driving tests until well into 2024.

In response to the mounting crisis, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire of the opposition party Sinn Fein has called upon the Transport Minister to take swift action and address the backlog of applications. He emphasized that relying solely on public transportation for an extended period is not always a feasible solution for those awaiting their driving tests. The lack of available testing slots and the subsequent delays have created a situation where individuals are left with limited options for mobility and independence.

The RSA, grappling with the challenge of recruiting new driving testers due to the prolonged length of the tests themselves, has approached the Transport Department with a plea to allow additional recruitment efforts. Specifically, the RSA has requested the Transport Department to greenlight new recruitments beginning in March. This move is seen as crucial to expedite the clearing of the ever-growing backlog and to alleviate the pressure on both the testing centers and aspiring drivers.

If the current situation persists, there is a genuine concern that a substantial number of individuals may not have the opportunity to take their practical driving tests until 2024, creating a significant setback for personal and professional mobility across Cork. As public frustration mounts and road safety remains a paramount concern, all eyes are now on the authorities to find swift and effective solutions to this pressing issue.
