Dublin, Ireland – The Garda Representative Association (GRA) has assured the public that a strike by Garda members protesting new duty hours will not compromise the country’s security. Approximately 11,000 out of Ireland’s 14,000-member Garda force are GRA members.
The dispute stems from Commissioner Drew Harris’ proposal to continue the overtime duties that were introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic even after the restrictions have lifted. Garda members, who were previously engaged in voluntary overtime, have decided not to work overtime on Tuesdays as a form of protest, with the strike expected to continue until November 10.
Commissioner Harris argues that the new duty hours are essential to maintaining law and order but come at a high cost. In contrast, the GRA claims that the previous schedule was detrimental to its members and reduced efficiency.
Despite the strike, the GRA maintains that the country’s policing system will remain effective, with members willing to perform extra duty when necessary. The situation will be closely monitored to ensure the security and safety of Ireland’s citizens.
