Joseph Shalbin moved to Ireland in 2018, and started working as a nurse in St. James’s Hospital Dublin. He is from Puthenvelikara, north paravur Ernakulam, has completed diploma in electronics, Bcom, GNM and MBA HCS, completed education from Kerala, Bangalore and Mumbai, after finishing MBA, he was working as a hospital manager in Mumbai .
While he started working, he noticed some disparities among overseas nurse’s work permit system and raised voice against that. He could gather the same problem facing people in Ireland by starting a campaign in an online platform. From 2014 onwards nursed were categorised into two General Skill nurses(GNM) and Critical skill Nurses (BSc) based on the degrees they process. Though they both were having same salaries and job profile other employment benefits were different.
Shalbin initiated a Whatsaap group with nurses from Kerala and later added candidates from Philippines, Sudan, Zimbabwe, South Africa . Under his leadership a review petition was filed and requested the labour ministry and associated officials .As a result of writing innumerable letters and series of meetings with various government bodies, the issue was raised in Irish Parliament and all the overseas nurses granted critical skill work permit by Irish government in January 2020. It was one of the great rule change, which is very helpful to enormous overseas nurses in Ireland started by Mr.Shalbin .
In the same year he is elected as a vice chairperson of INMO (Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation) international section. In the end of 2020, he was elected as Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) Director Board member. Apart from NMBI and INMO activities, he is working as a nurse in Our lady’s hospital Navan, and also actively supporting nurses in their various job related issues.
