Above EU average: Ireland records sharp rise in sex crimes, report finds

Ireland has seen a significant increase in sex crimes, with rates now 43% higher than the EU average, according to new research published by the Centre for Justice and Law Reform.

The study shows that sex crime offences rose sharply between 2019 and 2023, placing Ireland well above the European Union average for this category of crime. In contrast, the report notes that Ireland’s homicide rate remains below the EU average, highlighting a mixed picture when it comes to serious crime.

The research also found that theft and related offences are a growing concern. Ireland’s rate for these crimes is 14% higher than the EU average, suggesting persistent challenges around property crime.

The authors of the report say the findings underline the need for stronger prevention strategies, victim support services, and effective policing, particularly in relation to sexual offences. They also point to the importance of understanding reporting patterns, legal definitions, and social factors that may be influencing the rise in recorded cases.

The Centre said the data should inform future criminal justice policy, with a focus on protecting vulnerable groups while addressing the underlying causes of crime.
