Eamon Ryan to step down as Green Party leader after poll drubbing

Eamon Ryan is expected to step down as Green Party chief on Tuesday, following his party’s drubbing in the recently held local and European elections.

The move means Ryan will become the second coalition leader to step down this year, after former taoiseach Leo Varadkar resigned as Fine Gael leader in April.

However, it is expected that Ryan will retain his role as Transport and Climate Minister. Ryan is likely to make an announcement following Cabinet meeting.

The Green Party suffered a blow in the local and European elections as it lost more than half its council seats and both European Parliament seats.
