EV registrations surge in June as overall car sales jump

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has reported a significant rise in new electric vehicle (EV) registrations for June, highlighting a growing shift toward cleaner transport options in Ireland.

A total of 1,246 new electric cars were registered during the month, representing an 81.9 per cent increase compared to 685 registrations in June 2024.

Year-to-date figures also reflect strong momentum in the EV market. So far in 2025, 13,631 new electric cars have been registered, marking a 27 per cent rise from the same period last year, when 10,737 EVs were sold.

Overall new car registrations also saw a sharp rise in June. SIMI reported 2,441 new car registrations last month, up 63.5 per cent compared to 1,493 in June 2024.

Cumulatively, car sales have risen modestly so far this year. A total of 81,750 new cars have been registered in 2025, representing a 3.5 per cent increase over the same period last year, when 78,979 vehicles were sold.

Despite the surge in electric car sales, petrol vehicles remain the most popular choice among buyers, accounting for 27.23 per cent of new registrations in June. This was followed by hybrid petrol-electric vehicles at 22.7 per cent, diesel cars at 17.26 per cent, fully electric vehicles at 16.67 per cent and plug-in hybrid electrics at 14.46 per cent.
