Fatal stabbing in Cork leaves woman dead and husband seriously injured

A woman has died and her husband is seriously injured after a stabbing outside their home in Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough, Cork City on Monday night. The couple, believed to be in their late 50s and early 60s, were attacked around 9pm, and both were rushed to Cork University Hospital, where the woman later died.

A man in his 20s, known to the couple, was arrested at the scene. A knife was recovered, and gardaí from the Armed Support Unit attended the incident. The suspect is being detained at a Cork garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, pending confirmation that he is medically fit to be questioned.

Gardaí have cordoned off multiple locations, with a full forensic examination underway. Taoiseach Micheál Martin, who lives in the area, described the incident as “extremely sad” and said neighbours are deeply shocked by the tragedy.

A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed, and a Family Liaison Officer is supporting the victim’s relatives.
