Government makes little progress on promised digital healthcare system

Digital healthcare will be a “game-changer” for patients, but concerns have emerged about the slow pace of progress on implementing the planned system.

The Oireachtas health committee heard that officials cannot yet share projected costs for the digital healthcare system due to ongoing negotiations with IT vendors.

Health Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill and Department of Health officials acknowledged that “very little has moved” on the initiative, despite its potential to transform patient care and healthcare delivery.

The digital healthcare system is expected to modernize Ireland’s health service by improving data sharing, reducing administrative burden, and enhancing patient access to their medical records. However, the lack of concrete progress and unavailable cost projections have raised questions about the timeline for implementation.

The committee heard that negotiations with technology vendors are still ongoing, preventing officials from providing detailed financial estimates for the ambitious project.

The slow progress comes amid broader challenges facing Ireland’s healthcare system, including capacity constraints and workforce shortages. Digital transformation has been identified as a key priority for improving efficiency and patient outcomes across the health service.

Further details on timelines and costs are expected once vendor negotiations conclude, though no specific date has been provided for when this information will be available.
