Heavy rain and thunderstorms to batter South and Southwest as Met Éireann issues Yellow warnings

Met Éireann has issued Status Yellow weather warnings for heavy rain across Cork, Kerry and Waterford, with alerts taking effect tomorrow and lasting until Sunday morning.

In Cork and Kerry, the warning begins at 5pm tomorrow and remains in place until 5am Sunday. In Waterford, the warning takes effect at 8pm tomorrow evening and lasts until 8am Sunday.

Forecasters are warning of spells of heavy rain with the possibility of a few thundery downpours. Potential impacts include localised flooding and difficult travelling conditions across the affected areas.

A similar rainfall warning will be issued for counties Antrim, Armagh and Down in Northern Ireland from midnight Sunday until 12noon Sunday.

Weekend Forecast

Today started mainly dry and cloudy with limited bright spells, with temperatures reaching 12 to 16 degrees. Tonight will remain largely cloudy and dry apart from occasional drizzle and mist, though rain will move into western and southwestern coasts around dawn.

Saturday will be dull and breezy, starting with scattered rain in the west and southwest that will gradually spread northeastwards throughout the day. Rain will turn heavier in the south and southwest towards evening, with heavy and persistent rain becoming widespread early Saturday night. Thundery bursts are possible with spot flooding likely.

Sunday will see heavy and persistent rain in the north and east at first, with further thundery falls and spot flooding possible. Rain will clear northeastwards through the morning with sunshine and showers following from the southwest, some of which will be heavy.

Sunday night will bring clear spells and showers for most, though a longer spell of rain will move into the south and southwest, turning heavy at times.

New Week

Monday will start with a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, merging to longer spells of rain at times. Further outbreaks of rain will develop overnight Monday.
