Inis Oírr receives €35.75 million as first project under revised National Development Plan

A major harbour infrastructure project on Inis Oírr, the smallest of the Aran Islands, has become the first initiative to receive funding under the government’s newly revised €275 billion National Development Plan.

Gaeltacht Minister Dara Calleary and Public Expenditure Minister Jack Chambers traveled to the Gaeltacht island today to announce €35.75 million in funding for a significant extension of the quay and breakwater facilities.

The project involves constructing a concrete pier extension and breakwater designed to provide enhanced protection from waves and storms within the harbour, along with increased berthing space for vessels. The improvements are particularly aimed at addressing summer demand when tourist traffic peaks.

Minister Calleary described the funding as the largest amount approved for a single project by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht since its establishment in 2017.

“The overall cost of this project is €35.75 million, with over €30 million for the construction contract alone,” Calleary stated. “This investment will ensure safe year-round access for island residents and visitors alike, with better facilities for ferries, and will support the community to thrive for generations to come.”

Minister Chambers emphasized the project’s significance as the first announcement since the publication of the revised National Development Plan last month, highlighting the government’s commitment to delivering essential infrastructure to islands and Gaeltacht communities.

Galway County Council serves as the lead agency for the project, with Ward and Burke Construction Ltd appointed as the contractor following a two-year tendering process.

The infrastructure development represents a substantial investment in Ireland’s island communities and demonstrates the government’s priority of maintaining connectivity and supporting sustainable development in remote Gaeltacht regions.
