Ireland sees record surge in apprenticeships and further education for 2024

Further education and training (FET) in Ireland has reached unprecedented levels, with over 400,000 places filled by nearly 230,000 learners in 2024, according to new data released by Solas.

The figures show significant growth across various educational pathways:

  • More than 9,300 new apprentices registered across 77 different programs
  • Nearly 10,000 employers participating in apprenticeship schemes
  • 25,000 workers enrolled in ‘Skills to Advance’ upskilling programs
  • 37,000 learners using eCollege online platform, up 47% from 2023
  • Over 150,000 construction skills cards issued, including 6,500 for zero energy buildings and retrofitting

Solas CEO Andrew Brownlee highlighted the growing trend of school leavers choosing FET and apprenticeships as their first choice, noting that one in ten Irish adults are now engaged in some form of further education. The organization aims to expand its reach to half a million people by 2026.

According to The Irish Examiner, the programs span Levels 1-6 on the National Framework of Qualifications and are delivered through various formats including full-time, part-time, evening, and online courses across 16 Education and Training Boards nationwide.

“FET is now being considered as the ‘go to’ place for up-skilling and reskilling, and recognised as a vital resource that can respond quickly to the critical skills needs in Ireland,” Brownlee said, emphasizing the sector’s role in workforce transformation and educational accessibility.
