Irish Rail passengers within 50 km of Dublin can now pay using a Leap card

Major changes are on the way for rail users in Dublin and surrounding areas, with Irish Rail introducing its new “Dublin Commuter Zone” fare structure, taking effect from Monday.

The new system divides the commuter belt into four zones, extending Leap card access to passengers traveling within 50km of Dublin. Commuters in towns such as Drogheda, Newbridge, and Rathdrum will now be included in this network.

Zone 1 covers central Dublin and its suburbs, stretching past Dublin Airport to Rush and Donabate in the north, and as far south as Bray in Co. Wicklow.

Irish Rail said fares will be reduced for passengers in zones 3 and 4, while zone 2 will see a mix of fare increases and decreases.

Specific routes between central Dublin and areas like Balbriggan, Skerries, Kilcock, Sallins and Naas, Greystones, and Kilcoole will experience fare hikes.

However, passengers traveling to and from locations such as Gormanston, Drogheda, Laytown, Enfield, Newbridge, Kildare, Wicklow, and Rathdrum will benefit from fare reductions.

The changes apply to adult, young adult, student, and child fares, aiming to simplify and standardise pricing across the commuter network.
