Irish Tea Traditions: 3 Cups a Day and a Love for Supermarket Teabags

A new survey conducted to mark International Tea Day has shed light on the tea-drinking habits of people in the Republic of Ireland. On average, an Irish person enjoys three cups of tea daily.

The research, carried out by casino.co.uk, found that a whopping 94% of respondents follow the same routine when making tea: tea bag first, followed by hot water, and then milk.

When it comes to brewing time, those in the Republic of Ireland typically let their tea steep for 75 seconds. In comparison, tea drinkers in Northern Ireland prefer a slightly longer brewing time of 96 seconds.

The survey also revealed a clear preference for real sugar over artificial sweeteners among those who sweeten their tea. Additionally, own brand supermarket teabags have become more popular than traditional named brands.

These findings highlight the strong and specific tea-drinking traditions that persist across Ireland, emphasizing the importance of tea in daily life and the subtle regional differences in how it’s prepared.
