A Waterford student drowned on Friday afternoon after having trouble swimming in west Waterford.
According to The Irish Examiner, the victim was identified last night as Cian Nugent (21), an engineering student at UCC from Old Parish in the Waterford Gaeltacht.
Mr. Nugent, who comes from a farming background, was one of five people swimming at Whiting Bay, some 3 km from Ardmore.
Garda officers were notified that many swimmers had encountered trouble in the bay at around 1:30 p.m.
Three persons were pulled ashore by the Coast Guard.
The individual was flown to Cork University Hospital where he was later declared dead.
The two other individuals were uninjured.
The incident, which is being handled as a terrible accident, will be the subject of a file made for the coroner.
