A Dundalk couple is getting popularity by making low cost homes using shipping containers. The couple James O’Kane and partner Berni Moore started container home construction during lockdowns in the country. They have also started a company named GTL Containers which has operations all over Ireland.
GTL Containers have built homes in places including Cork, Kerry, Tipperary and Galway. They are also getting more inquiries every day from across the country.
A GTL container home costs €59,950 for a one-bed 40ft. There are add-on options and some customers want extra bedrooms. A three-bed container costs under €75,000.
“You walk in, there’s everything, a fridge freezer, an oven, a sofa bed. We usually say you can walk in with your suitcases and stay that night,” Ms Moore said.
The container home can be delivered anywhere but the couple say buyers need to look into planning permission. The homes can also be shifted to a different place even after building. At the same time they are long durable.
The showhouse container opened this weekend for viewings and people can view them with prior appointment. Viewing facility will continue into next month.
